Carus Employees Credit Union was formed in 1957 to serve the employees and family members of Carus Chemical. Two years later, 1959, the Nailworkers Credit Union opened for the employees and families of Maze Nail and Maze Lumber.

Both credit unions were originally located in the homes of their managers at the time.

In 2014 the two credit unions merged to become SmartChoice Credit Union. The merger was a plus for both credit unions and helped to provide better services for the members with a more professional presence with an office established in Spring Valley, IL.

Members of the Dalzell Rod and Gun club were added to the credit union in 2021.
